Gerda Steiner & Joerg Lenzlinger
On the occasion of the exhibition Im Wald spazieren gehen und die Gedanken von der Leine lassen. To go for a walk in the woods and unleash ones thoughts by the artists Gerda Steiner and Joerg Lenzlinger that will open at the Buchmann Gallery in Agra (Lugano) Saturday 12 May 2012 from 3 to 6pm, i2a istituto internazionale di architettura will be welcoming the artists before the inauguration Wednesday 9 May 2012 at 8.30pm. Steiner & Lenzlinger will present at i2a in Vico Morcote their work from the past decade in a conference entitled Eye apples – Site specific installations.
i2a istituto internazionale di architettura illustrates itself once again as an active meeting place, offering opportunities for reflection through the contributions of those belonging to fields related to and complementary with architecture.
Gerda Steiner started her practice with large scale mural paintings that recall the psychedelic motifs of the 60s'. Joerg Lenzlinger, on the other side, experiments the possibilities offered by industrially produced carbamide, that sets in colourful concretions and crystalline landscapes.
They have been working together since 1998 on installations in situ, living the selected environment, exploring the places, interacting with the locals and giving shape to – through various objects, plants and rarities – fantastic and luxuriant worlds. These appear as real reveries that enchant the visitor and invite one to discover the details of the designed microcosm, drawing in like “imaginary tentacles” (Isabel Friedli). Friedli also sustains that the quotation “Il faut cultiver notre jardin” deals with the short story Candide ou l'optimisme by Voltaire seems to perfectly summarise the main idea of the two artists' work.
In 2003, Steiner & Lenzlinger represented Switzerland at the 50th edition of the international art Biennale in Venice with the installation Giardino calante in the San Staë church: above a bed placed in the middle of the nave hovers an overflow of vegetation constituted of seeds, stems, fibres that create a dense autonomous cosmos.
Over the years, the artists have in particular worked on Heimatmaschine for the Expo.02 in Murten, Les Envahisseurs! for Geneva's botanical garden in 2004 and, the same year, Brainforest at the 21st century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Seelenwaermer in the Stiftsbibliothek in San Gallen in 2005, Found & Lost Grotto of Saint Antonio at the San Antonio Artspace (Texas, 2006), The Water Hole at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Melbourne in 2008 and the recent exhibition Power Sources at the Art Tower in Mito (Japan, 2012).
The conference Eye apples – Site specific installations by Gerda Steiner & Joerg Lenzlinger will be held in English Wednesday 9 May 2012 at 8.30pm at i2a istituto internazionale di architettura (free admittance, first floor hall, Portich da Sura 18, Vico Morcote, Switzerland).
