Academic and Cultural Unit

The new Academic and Cultural Unit represents an important step in the consolidation of the UNAM campus in Morelia. This new infrastructure will serve three essential functions: teaching, research, and cultural promotion.
The campus auditorium, with seating for 270 spectators, will serve as a venue for congresses and cultural events, and lend support to the promotional activities of the Botanical Gardens.
The long-distance education classrooms will support the teaching activities of the new degree programs and the coordination of administrative services will have the space it needs. Academic areas will be freed up, in line with the UNAM's policy of administrative decentralization through secondary campuses.

Owing to its location and the services it offers, the building will be a gateway to the campus and a meeting point for its various departments, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, social interaction, and the exchange of ideas through the new auditorium, the long-distance classrooms, and the central cafeteria.

Felipe Leal (Mexico City, 1956) graduated as an architect from the UNAM, and served as the director of its Architecture School (1997-2005). He has been a guest lecturer at universities in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Since 1997 he has hosted the radio program La Arquitectura en el Espacio y en el Tiempo, Radio UNAM. He is a member of the of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte of the Fonca.
