positions in space 13 - mph architectes: intimità
Wednesday 28 March 2012 at 6.30pm we will be inaugurating at i2a istituto internazionale di architettura in Vico Morcote the 13th appointment in the series of events positions in space. This time, i2a crosses the border between Ticino and the rest of Switzerland to exchange with different regions and cultures. i2a will be presenting the poetry of polyhedric actors of today’s architecture scene based in Lausanne and Barcelona: MPH architectes, i.e. Nicolas Monnerat, Franck Petitpierre and Olaf Hunger. The title of the installation they will be showin is Intimità (Intimacy) that suggests a reflection on the notion of threshold and border. MPH have chosen to involve the artist Florian Graf, who trained as an architect, implicating the German speaking region of Switzerland and making their intervention interdisciplinary and supra-regional.
Architects are always faced with the concept of “intimacy” when meeting clients wanting a new house. What is intimacy? How does one act in an intimate space? How is intimacy spoken of? Stemming from these questions, MPH architectes create an installation with circular elements laid-out, some hanging from the ceiling, in i2a’s exhibition space. On the occasion of the vernissage, MPH and Florian Graf will offer a performance that intends to provoke a reaction among the public; the visitors, effectively, will be encouraged to interact with the circles and other visitors, in a relationship of proximity and of distance, but also in a perpetual game. A photographic report, produced before and during the show’s opening, will complete the exhibition in order to summarize the induced dynamics.
Florian Graf will also hold a conference on March 28th, in English, presenting some of his work over the years related to the topic of intimacy, among which Folly of De-Fence (Binningen, near Basel, 2010), an inquiry on the issues of public and private, and Well, Come (Bellelay Abbey, Canton Bern, 2011), a reflection on a more direct intimacy also addressing issues of hospitality and refuge.

At the end of the event, those who wish will be able to pursue the evening with the guests with a standing dinner on the 2nd floor of i2a (CHF 30.- per person all inclusive, reservations by Monday 26 March 2012 by phoning 0041 91 996 13 87 or via e-mail at [email protected]).
The installation can be seen every day until Wednesday 2 May 2012 at i2a istituto internazionale di architettura (Monday-Sunday 10am-8pm, free admittance, ground-floor room, closed from Friday 6 to Tuesday 10 April).
For the finissage, scheduled Wednesday 2 May 2012 at 8.30pm, MPH architectes, to talk about themselves, will hold a conference presenting some of their projects.
