Description
Project competition 2004
1st prize 'Magma'/ Evariste Mertens Award 2004
Client City of Schaffhausen, Georg Fischer SA Schaffhausen, Federation of Swiss landscape architects

The competition task was to design a park for an area that is now a parking lot including the surrounding asphalt pavement. A feasible design with environmental quality should be obtained for the construction task Durachpark. The main idea of the winning project "Magma" is to cut segments from the existing continuous asphalt surface to uncover and then cultivate the land. These unsealed areas are then transformed to be coexistent with humans and animals. The finished space remains a network of trails, which allow tranquillity, continuity and connection. The development of the unsealed areas, will be initiated by planting or seeding and then by controlled maintenance. This strategy contributes to the high flexibility of the system in use for the future.
