beyond urbanization: new perspectives of urban development

i2a istituto internazionale di architettura will open on Wednesday 20 June 2012 at 8pm in Vico Morcote (Lugano) an exhibition entitled Beyond Urbanization: new perspectives of urban development showing works commissioned by i2a from a selection of researchers on the intermodal hub of the Vedeggio valley (Lugano) and the urban development along the FLP line (Ferrovie Lugano Ponte Tresa). It however also offers comparisons with projects in Switzerland and abroad in order to highlight how contemporary the issue of the relations between public space and infrastructure and mobility is.
On this occasion, a round-table will be held with Alberto Figuccio and Mehdi Aouabed of Fil Rouge Architecture (Geneva), Europan 10 and 11 winners with their project for the redefinition of the urban area of Nyon (Canton Vaud) and of Monthey (Canton Wallis); Vincenzo Cribari and Marco Malossini of Q-Field Landscape, Urban Design & Environmental Services (Rovereto) who have created a studio, on a public commission, on the industrial areas of Trentino; Francesca Mazzone and Valentina Grasso, architects and researchers at i2a, as well as Francesco Messina of Bodàr – bottega d’architettura who promote projects on the Vedeggio valley and along the FLP line respectively under the supervision of i2a.

The show and round-table – and their accompanying publication – are part of a program of studies on infrastructure and contemporary urban landscape initiated by i2a in 2011 called infrarealities and directed by Jachen Könz, architect and urban planner, and Alessandro Martinelli, researcher in residence and curator at i2a. The region covering Lugano, the Vedeggio valley and the Ponte Tresa pass, a perfect case study, was chosen because of the extent and capillarity of its infrastructure network.
