KCAP Architects&Planners is an internationally operating design firm practising architecture and urbanism. KCAP was founded in 1989 by Kees Christiaanse and enjoys today an international practice with offices in Rotterdam, Zurich and Shanghai.
Our buildings and masterplans demonstrate a track record of appealing projects with a strong identity and a mix of uses and users. KCAP is particularly reputed for realising concepts and designs on the fringe between architecture and urbanism. These powerful and outspoken ideas present a social and spatial cohesion. Simultaneously they offer the required flexibility to manoeuvre within unpredictable changing circumstances.
Realised projects include the Red Apple in Rotterdam, HafenCity in Hamburg and the Oostelijke Handelskade in Amsterdam. Currently under construction are, amongst others, the Europaallee central station district in Zurich and ‘thinking districts’ in Luxembourg, Amsterdam and Shanghai. The internationally renowned masterplans around the future TGV station district in Montpellier and the Neo Heyzel strategic pole in Brussels are in the process of finalisation.
KCAP has won numerous international design competitions. Besides the projects in Hamburg, Montpellier, Brussels, Luxembourg and Zurich, we were successful in amongst others: Bay of Pasaia in San Sebastian, FredericiaC in Denmark, NewTime in Paris, ScienceCity in Zurich and the Vernier-Meyrin Airport in Geneva. Also, KCAP has received awards for the designs of the Perm Strategic Masterplan, Holzhafen Hamburg and FredericiaC Denmark. Furthermore, office buildings in the Netherlands and Paris received leading sustainability certificates like BREEAM Excellent.
Over the last 20 years, KCAP has developed a holistic design approach in which science, art and intuition attain a mature complementarity. We look for strategic collaborations with experts in various disciplines such as construction and building technology, traffic engineering, business and program development strategies and sustainability.
Our clients range from international project developers and investors to local authorities and public bodies.
KCAP is led by four partners - Kees Christiaanse, Han van den Born, Ruurd Gietema, Irma van Oort - and Ute Schneider, director KCAP Zurich, and works with an international staff of 75 professionals.
