Texel, a North Sea island off the Dutch coast, is a popular holiday destination. Only ten minutes on foot from the sea, a new weekend house has been built according to the plans of the Rotterdam architects Orange Architects, which promises a stay that is equally cosy and distinctive. On the outside, the “Tiny House” is covered with simple, black planking; on the inside, on the other hand, the guests are surrounded by a warm casing in light birch plywood. Furthermore, large windows on the south side connect the living area with a covered terrace.
Instead of dividing the house with fixed walls, Orange Architects conceived a flexible living area that is organised around a furniture block inserted in the middle. Using folding and sliding elements, individual functional areas can be separated off if required. In this way, the bed recess in the central fitted element converts at night into a comfortable bedroom, while the shower and washbasin “grow” into their own bathroom.
Solar collectors on the roof, natural ventilation, a concrete floor that functions as a thermal mass and good insulation of all surfaces makes the pre-fabricated wooden house a small sustainability marvel. Heating, hot-water heating and the oven all use electricity so that no fossil fuels are used. The complete house is equipped with switches and sockets from the AS 500 program from JUNG in white. The inexpensive standard program is characterised by a distinctive angle of the switch rockers, which leads to harmonious lines that connect frame and cover.
